Playing in the CAHL with the Redcliff Grizzlies last year, Greggains, a defenseman, was clocked with a 103km/h slapshot during a skills comp. "I happened to come across a video from the Grizzlies' skills comp and watched this young man crack that puck. Right then and there I added his name to our 'want list' "said Nola Besplug, talent scout for SES. "All our players are chosen for different aspects. Greggains' 103km/h splashot definitely worked in our favor"
"Rhys is great for this team" says Head Coach Tyler Broesky "He is great on and off the ice. That goal was a laser I didn't even see it go into the net"
Greggains scored the team's inaugural goal with that beauty. In fact, he scored 2 goals in the 2010's first game using that heat seeker earning him the Club's Prime Example player of the game.
To say Olynyk eats, sleeps and breathes hockey is an understatement. Playing with the Yorkton Core Real Estate AA Terriers last season, Olynyk's impressive backchecking and hockey sense scored him an invite to the team.
"It's a good thing we have family in the Hat" comments his dad Wasyl, "Yuri will say yes to hockey anywhere he can get his skates on the ice and then ask for a ride later, lol I don't think he even knows that its a 7 hour drive from home"
Living close to the Manitoba border, the trek makes it hard to make all the practices, but fear not, Olynyk is on the ice with another Spring team out of Yorkton. "He definitely gets his practices in. We are only able to commit to weekends with a practice and a game, and the tournaments, so Yuri has to make a positive impact in the short time he has with the team. It's a good thing he has the personality to make it happen" says Dad.
"He's an incredible team player" said Head Coach Brent McNabb. "these kids don't know each other (a specific objective of the SES Hockey Club) and here comes Olynyk, first practice and game and he's made friends with everyone, goes out and starts leading dryland, pumping up the team in the dressing room and on the bench; and then gives 110% on the ice. He is a very smart hockey player, talks hockey like a U18 player. He has the knowledge. I look forward to working with him"
Making the switch from RW to C, and fueled by chicken nuggets (see below) Olynyk scored the lone marker during the teams 8-1 loss v the Tigers Hockey Club out of Irvine. "toe drag n top shelf, it was just a flick of the wrists" said Olynyk of his goal - the inaugural 2012 goal.
